  1. Environmental Contamination by Heavy Metals

    Vhahangwele Masindi, Khathutshelo Lilith Muedi

    2018InTech eBooks998 citations Open access

The environment and its compartments have been severely polluted by heavy metals. This has compromised the ability of the environment to foster life and render its intrinsic values. Heavy metals are known to be naturally occurring compounds, but anthropogenic activities introduce them in large quantities in different environmental compartments. This leads to the environment’s ability to foster life being reduced as human, animal, and plant health become threatened. This occurs due to bioaccumulation in the food chains as a result of the nondegradable state of the heavy metals. Remediation of heavy metals requires special attention to protect soil quality, air quality, water quality, human health, animal health, and all spheres as a collection. Developed physical and chemical heavy metal remediation technologies are demanding costs which are not feasible, time-consuming, and release additional waste to the environment. This chapter summarises the problems related to heavy metal pollution and various remediation technologies. A case study in South Africa mines were also used.

    Arun Kumar Shanker, B. Venkateswarlu

    2011InTech eBooks592 citations Open access

World population is growing at an alarming rate and is anticipated to reach about six billion by the end of year 2050. On the other hand, agricultural productivity is not increasing at a required rate to keep up with the food demand. The reasons for this are water shortages, depleting soil fertility and mainly various abiotic stresses. The fast pace at which developments and novel findings that are recently taking place in the cutting edge areas of molecular biology and basic genetics, have reinforced and augmented the efficiency of science outputs in dealing with plant abiotic stresses. In depth understanding of the stresses and their effects on plants is of paramount importance to evolve effective strategies to counter them. This book is broadly dived into sections on the stresses, their mechanisms and tolerance, genetics and adaptation, and focuses on the mechanic aspects in addition to touching some adaptation features. The chief objective of the book hence is to deliver state of the art information for comprehending the nature of abiotic stress in plants. We attempted here to present a judicious mixture of outlooks in order to interest workers in all areas of plant sciences.

  6. Research of Calcium Phosphates Using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy

    Līga Bērziņa-Cimdiņa, Natālija Borodajenko

    2012InTech eBooks578 citations Open access

In the biomaterial research field, nowadays a great attention is driven onto calcium phosphates synthesis and obtaining of ceramics that can be used in orthopedics and dentistry, in the form of coatings, granules, porous or solid blocks, as well as in the form of various composite materials. The most frequently studied, clinically tested and used synthetic materials based on calcium phosphate (CaP) are hydroxyapatite [HAp Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2], ┚-tricalcium phosphate [┚-TCP Ca3(PO4)2] and biphasic HAp/┚-TCP mixture. CaP ceramic demonstrates high biocompatibility and bioactivity while it contacts bone cells, builds a direct chemical connection between bone tissues and ceramic implant. As practice shows, purchased materials, most often commercial CaP materials, not always have properties and qualities defined by the manufacturer. Frequently, the manufacturer’s information about the offered product is not complete or precise, by it troubling usage of raw CaP material for development of implants. The most common imperfections of CaP materials are – unpredictable properties after the high temperature treatment (composition and clarity of crystal phases, chemical composition, thermal stability, etc.) which become clear only after the high temperature treatment of the ready implant material has occurred. For several years, Riga Biomaterial Innovation and Development Centre (RBIDC) of Riga Technical University perform a wide range of property studies of various commercial CaP raw materials.

  1. Sensing Technologies in the Evaluation of the Mechanical Properties of the Plantar Flexors by Using the Free Vibration Technique

Federico París-García, Ruiz-Zafra Angel, Manuel Noguera, Barroso Alberto

    2018InTech eBooks0 citations Open access

The use of free vibration techniques to evaluate the responsiveness of a one-degree-of-freedom dynamic system linked to musculo-articular stiffness (MAS) of the plantar flexors has become an accepted procedure in scientific literature. However, the applicability and widespread use of this parameter have been limited thus far for different issues. On the one hand, the measurement of this parameter requires a noninvasive, nonstress laboratory test, which implies the use of appropriate in-lab infrastructure, ad hoc mechanical devices, and specific signal sensing units. On the other hand, it requires an efficient treatment and processing of the signal data obtained from laboratory tests through different signal filtering techniques and mathematical transformations. In the present manuscript, the fundamentals of the free vibration technique, the measurement device, the adjustment procedure, and finally the software based on java platform are presented in order to show the applicability of the MAS as parameter to evaluate the functional response of one subject based on his mechanical response of the lower part of the body once the whole procedure is addressed and controlled to ensure the reproducibility and the reliability of the test.

  2. Lactic Acid Bacteria Contribution to Wine Quality and Safety

    António Inês, Virgílio Falco

    2018InTech eBooks18 citations Open access

Wine production is a complex biochemical process that brings into play different microorganisms. Among these, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) play a central role in the quality of the final wine. LAB are not only responsible for the malolactic fermentation that usually occurs after the alcoholic fermentation but also contribute for other important biochemical reactions such as esterase and glycosidase activities and citric acid and methionine metabolism. Nonetheless, LAB may also contribute negatively to wine quality by contributing to the production of volatile phenols, biogenic amines, and ethyl carbamate. This chapter aims to integrate the current knowledge about the role of LAB in wine flavor and quality.

  3. Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity: From Mechanisms to Development of Efficient Therapy

Danúbia Silva dos Santos, Regina Coeli dos Santos Goldenberg

    2018InTech eBooks70 citations Open access

First isolated in the early 1960s, doxorubicin (DOX) is among the most effective anticancer agents ever developed. DOX has been used mainly for the treatment of breast cancer, solid tumors in children, soft tissue sarcomas, and aggressive lymphomas. However, the use of DOX may have dose-dependent cardiotoxic effects that generate changes in myocardial structure, which can develop into severe and irreversible cardiomyopathy. Here, we describe the incidence of DOX-induced cardiotoxicity (DIC); the progress made over the past four decades in understanding the molecular mechanisms of the pathogenesis of acute and chronic DIC; the current strategies for heart protection; and the major breakthroughs and challenges in basic and clinical research to the development of efficient targeted therapy for DIC.

  5. The Yellow Sea Surface Cold Patches in Warm Seasons

    X. San Liang, Minghai Huang, Hui Wu, Yihe Wang

    2018InTech eBooks7 citations Open access

An important hydrographic phenomenon in the Yellow Sea is the surface cold patches (SCP) in warm seasons, among which the most conspicuous are the Shandong SCP, Subei SCP, and Mokpo SCP. Previous studies based on monthly mean fields propose that these patches result from the collaboration of tidal mixing and tidal induced upwelling. While this is true for patches like the Shandong SCP, the monthly mean tidal mixing and upwelling alone cannot explain all their formations. In this study, through a detailed analysis of their patterns over a spring-neap tidal cycle, it is found that the Subei and Mokpo SCPs show distinct spring-neap variations. During the neap tide phase, strong stratification is established, and hence the cold patches in these two areas may be greatly weakened or even suppressed, while during the spring tide phase, the surface temperature reaches its minimum. That is to say, for these two SCPs, besides the well-accepted mechanisms, the effect of spring-neap tidal variation must be taken into account.

  6. Coastal Upwelling Off the China Coasts

Jianyu Hu, X. San Liang, Hongyang Lin

    2018InTech eBooks5 citations Open access

Upwelling is an important oceanographic phenomenon that brings cooler and nutrient-rich water upward to the surface, facilitating the growth of phytoplankton and other primary producers, which results in high levels of primary productivity and hence fishery production. This chapter presents a review of recent studies on six major upwelling regions along the China coasts, with a focus on the eastern and southeastern coasts of mainland China, based on in situ measurements, satellite observations and numerical simulations. These upwelling regions result primarily from the summer monsoon winds, though other mechanisms, such as river discharge, baroclinicity, topography, tides, and the presence of mean current, may also be in play. In this review, their impacts on local biogeochemical processes are briefly summarized. Also discussed are their possible responses to the globally changing climate.

  7. Types of HVAC Systems

    Shaimaa Seyam

    2018InTech eBooks43 citations Open access

HVAC systems are milestones of building mechanical systems that provide thermal comfort for occupants accompanied with indoor air quality. HVAC systems can be classified into central and local systems according to multiple zones, location, and distribution. Primary HVAC equipment includes heating equipment, ventilation equipment, and cooling or air-conditioning equipment. Central HVAC systems locate away from buildings in a central equipment room and deliver the conditioned air by a delivery ductwork system. Central HVAC systems contain all-air, air-water, all-water systems. Two systems should be considered as central such as heating and cooling panels and water-source heat pumps. Local HVAC systems can be located inside a conditioned zone or adjacent to it and no requirement for ductwork. Local systems include local heating, local air-conditioning, local ventilation, and split systems.

  8. Synthesis and Nonlinear Studies on Selected Organic Compounds in Nanostructured Thin Films

    Ludmila Otilia Cinteză, Maria Marinescu

    2018InTech eBooks8 citations Open access

Organic compounds based on ferrocene, pyrazolone, and octahydroacridine exhibit high interest due to their unusual structure, with potential practical applications due to their special optical properties. Nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of some new synthesized derivatives are evaluated in relationship with the chemical structure by using DFT molecular modeling. In condensed state, ferrocene and other organic molecules were found in a staggered arrangement (D5d) as a nonpolar molecule, but the eclipsed (D5h) and twisted (D5) forms exhibit SHG capabilities. The molecular polarizability (α), first-order hyperpolarizabilities (βtot), dipole (μtot), and quadrupole (Q) moments were computed. The NLO efficiency was assessed by the relationship between high (βtot) and low HOMO-LUMO energy gap. The nonlinear optical properties of some new synthesized compounds were evaluated in thin films with nanometric morphology obtained using various methods: Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) thin films, sol-gel deposition, and layer-by-layer deposition.

    2018InTech eBooks0 citations Open access

In this chapter, we present the analysis for the effect of summertime SST on the coastal environments of Jiangsu province, China. We analyze the relationship between the SST and the Jiangsu precipitation in summer based on GPCP’s precipitation data and NOAA’s SST data from 1979 to 2011, using approaches that include correlation analysis, regression analysis, and lead-lag analysis. The results show that certain strong oceanic signals affect summer Jiangsu precipitation, showing that SST of some oceanic areas significantly affect the precipitation of Jiangsu in summer. By the lead-lag analysis, it is found that the spring SST plays an important role in the summer precipitation in the coastal areas of Jiangsu, China.
