  2. Data Mining in Education: Data Classification and Decision Tree Approach

    Sonali Agarwal

    2012International Journal of e-Education e-Business e-Management and e-Learning102 citations

Educational organizations are one of the important parts of our society and playing a vital role for growth and development of any nation. Data Mining is an emerging technique with the help of this one can efficiently learn with historical data and use that knowledge for predicting future behavior of concern areas. Growth of current education system is surely enhanced if data mining has been adopted as a futuristic strategic management tool. The Data Mining tool is able to facilitate better resource utilization in terms of student performance, course development and finally the development of nation's education related standards. In this paper a student data from a community college database has been taken and various classification approaches have been performed and a comparative analysis has been done. In this research work Support Vector Machines (SVM) are established as a best classifier with maximum accuracy and minimum root mean square error (RMSE). The study also includes a comparative analysis of all Support Vector Machine Kernel types and in this the Radial Basis Kernel is identified as a best choice for Support Vector Machine. A Decision tree approach is proposed which may be taken as an important basis of selection of student during any course program. The paper is aimed to develop a faith on Data Mining techniques so that present education and business system may adopt this as a strategic management tool. decision tree approach and decision rule approach. Considering the global opportunities coupled with global competition even in case of education it is essential to admit the best students as far as possible. So their academic performance and subsequent placements are best in the world. Data mining is useful whenever a system is dealing with large data sets. In any education system, student records i.e. enrollment details, course eligibility criteria, course interest and academic performance may be an important consideration to analyze various trends since all the systems are now computer based information system so data availability, modification and updation are a common process now. Data warehousing may be taken as good choice for maintaining the records of past history. The data warehouse can be easily developed in any education institute with the adaptation of common data standard. Common data standards may eliminate the need of data clarity and modification before loading this for a data warehouse. An institute with efficient Data Warehousing and Data Mining approach can find out novel way of improving student's behavior, success rate and course popularity. All these effort may finally improve the quality of education, better student intake, better career counseling and overall practices of education system. In Data Mining classification clustering and regression are the three key approaches. Classification is a supervised learning approach in which students are grouped into identified classes (1). Classification rules may be identified from a part of data known as training data and further it may be tested for rest of the data (2). The effectiveness of classification approach may be evaluated in terms of reliability of the rule with test data set. Clustering approach is based on unsupervised learning because there are no predefined classes. In this approach data may be grouped together as cluster (2), (3). The usability of clusters in terms of relevant area may be interpreted by data mining expert. Regression is a data mining approach in which it uses the explanatory variable to predict an outcome variable. For example, performance appraisal of faculty members may be done by regression analysis. Here, faculty qualification, feedback rating, amount of content covered may be taken as explanatory variable and faculty salary, increment, bonus and perks may be estimated as outcome variable so regression may be the best way to setting few important parameters based on existing variables (2).

Distance learning is not the product of the modern world as some may think; its origins go back to the 1720s with the very first experience of correspondence learning. Nevertheless, the concept of online learning, on the other hand, is the product of the modern digitalized world since its principal key element is the Internet. In this paper, we are going to clarify the ambiguity underlying two interrelated but different concepts which are ‘distance learning’ and ‘e-learning’. Then, we will trace the historical background of distance education in the world and in Algeria. In the end, we will present the results of a descriptive study that was conducted through an online questionnaire, and which targeted first-year students of the Department of the Arabic Language and Literature, University of Oran1 Ahmed Ben Bella. The purpose of this opinion poll was to reflect students’ impressions and evaluate their first and unique experience of learning English electronically during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  3. The Negligible Impact of Lecture Videos on the Learning Progress in a Laboratory Course during the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Anja Pfennig

    2022International Journal of e-Education e-Business e-Management and e-Learning0 citations Open access

During the covid-19 pandemic semesters of 2020/21 material science laboratory courses at HTW-Berlin had to be taught fully online to first year students of mechanical engineering and automotive engineering. Specially produced lecture videos are assigned and guide students through the laboratory routine prior to class. Students regard these lecture films as easy to use, supportive to individual study routines and scientifically helpful during self-study periods. They rated tasks and questions aligned with the learning outcome of the lecture videos as highly beneficial and –surprisingly- did not prefer face-to-face time. However, grades are much lower and much more students failed the class. This was directly related to the negative input of solemn studying, lack of human interaction, scientific discussions, lack of the possibility to fail and regain self-attentiveness as well as permanent online time. Otherwise highly supportive teaching material became negligible during the full online-semesters.

    Kuo‐Ming Chu, Hui-Chun Chan, Chi-Fang Liu

    2021International Journal of e-Education e-Business e-Management and e-Learning0 citations Open access

As the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic disordered the majority of all global supply chains, alliance knowledge learning played a fundamental function during the crisis. This paper aims to identify the relationships of both alliance green knowledge learning and institutional processes with the alliance performance of the green supply chain. It also specifies the mechanism by which Institutional isomorphism affects green innovation performance, through alliance institutional processes and further to increase their competitive advantage in the global market. Data were collected with questionnaires distributed to Taiwanese companies that are listed on the stock market which produced 242 usable responses for the analysis, both multiple regression analyses and SEM were used to test the hypotheses. Our results showed that the majority of our hypotheses were supported, which is similar to the existing literature. The outcomes imply that institutionalization processes and alliance green knowledge sharing play salient functions in firm alliance performance while implemented in the context of green supply chain management. Furthermore, the results indicate that the concept of institutionalization and isomorphism are relevant and Mimetic pressures were found to be the most significant in both internal and external green SCM practices, while also providing instructive managerial implications through empirical evidence.

    2021International Journal of e-Education e-Business e-Management and e-Learning2 citations Open access

As well as bringing convenience to consumers, online shopping also represents an enormous business opportunity. In online shopping, the Double 11 shopping festival (hereafter Double 11) organized by China’s Alibaba has set records and has continued to grow rapidly for the last 10 years. To understand this phenomenon, this study adapted self-determination theory to explore customers’ motivation and perceived values with respect to Double 11. This study focused on people who live in China who shopped during the China Double 11 Carnival Shopping Festival in 2018. A total of 399 validated data were collected and then confirmatory factor analysis with structural equation model was conducted. The results of the study show that purchase amotivation is not significantly related to, but extrinsic purchasing motivation is positively related to hedonic value and social value. Moreover, continuance intention to purchase can be positively predicted by hedonic value and social value. With a better understanding of these results, managers operating electronic businesses can use certain approaches to increase customers’ extrinsic motivation and enhance their experiential values to promote their continuance intention to purchase goods on a particular day, for example, by creating more shopping festivals.

Mohd Ekram Alhafis Hashim, Muhammad Zaffwan Idris, Che Soh Said

    2021International Journal of e-Education e-Business e-Management and e-Learning1 citations Open access

The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential of synergising of two major theories that sprang from two entirely different disciplines, namely the human-computer interaction (HCI) and the arts. Indeed, there are vast and diverse gaps when two different theories, such as technology and art, are to be combined to develop a new element that complements to both disciplines. In this paper, the proposition is to measure the user experience when dealing with an art object that infuses with digital technology. Augmented reality (AR) derived from the HCI discipline and customarily to UX as a measurement tool. On the other hand, a comic is an aesthetic object that requires an aesthetic-friendly method as its measurement tool. Ultimately, this paper proposes an integration of the UX and AX theories to evaluate an AR comic.
