Abstract We present the role of heat and electricity storage systems on the rapid rise of renewable energy resources and the steady fall of fossil fuels. The upsurge in renewable resources and slump in fossil fuel consumptions is attributed to sustainable energy systems, energy transition, climate change, and clean energy initiatives. The fast growth of renewables brings new design and operational challenges to transition towards 100% renewable energy goal. Energy storage systems can help ride‐through energy transition from hydrocarbon fuels to renewable sources. Nuclear fusion and artificial photosynthesis are the ultimate Holy Grails for permanent clean energy solutions. Plants harvest light and store it in chemical energy to regulate the food supply chain that may be a guideline for an energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables. Heat and electricity storage devices can account for the periodic nature of solar and wind energy sources. Solar thermal systems for water and space heating are also a viable solution for subzero temperature areas. This study presents the transition of world's energy prospect from fossil fuels to renewables and new advances in energy storage systems.

The development of highly active, universal, and stable inexpensive electrocatalysts/cocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by morphology and structure modulations remains a great challenge. Herein, a simple self-template strategy was developed to synthesize hollow Co-based bimetallic sulfide (MxCo3-xS4, M = Zn, Ni, and Cu) polyhedra with superior HER activity and stability. Homogenous bimetallic metal-organic frameworks are transformed to hollow bimetallic sulfides by solvothermal sulfidation and thermal annealing. Electrochemical measurements and density functional theory computations show that the combination of hollow structure and homoincorporation of a second metal significantly enhances the HER activity of Co3S4. Specifically, the homogeneous doping in Co3S4 lattice optimizes the Gibbs free energy for H* adsorption and improves the electrical conductivity. Impressively, hollow Zn0.30Co2.70S4 exhibits electrocatalytic HER activity better than most of the reported nobel-metal-free electrocatalysts over a wide pH range, with overpotentials of 80, 90, and 85 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and 129, 144, and 136 mV at 100 mA cm(-2) in 0.5 M H2SO4, 0.1 M phosphate buffer, and 1 M KOH, respectively. It also exhibits photocatalytic HER activity comparable to that of Pt cocatalyst when working with organic photosensitizer (Eosin Y) or semiconductors (TiO2 and C3N4). Furthermore, this catalyst shows excellent stability in the electrochemical and photocatalytic reactions. The strategy developed here, i.e., homogeneous doping and self-templated hollow structure, provides a way to synthesize transition metal sulfides for catalysis and energy conversion.

The elimination of dyes discharged from industrial wastewater into water bodies is crucial due to its detrimental effects on aquatic organisms and potential carcinogenic impact on human health. Various methods are employed for dye removal, but they often fall short in completely degrading the dyes and generating large amounts of suspended solids. Hence, there is a critical need for an efficient process that can achieve complete dye degradation with minimal waste emission. Among traditional water treatment approaches, photocatalysis stands out as a promising method for degrading diverse toxic and organic pollutants present in wastewater. In this review, the heterogeneous photocatalysis process is well explained for dye removal. This comprehensive review not only provides insightful illumination on the classification of dyes but also thoroughly explains various dye removal methods and the underlying mechanisms of photocatalysis. Furthermore, factors which effect the activity of the photocatalysis process are also explained in detail. Likewise, we categorized the heterogeneous photocatalyst in three generations and observed their activity for dye removal. This review also addresses the challenges and effectiveness of this promising field. Its primary aim is to offer a comprehensive overview of the photocatalytic degradation of pollution and to explore its potential for further future applications.

Energy Storage Technology is one of the major components of renewable energy integration and decarbonization of world energy systems. It significantly benefits addressing ancillary power services, power quality stability, and power supply reliability. However, the recent years of the COVID-19 pandemic have given rise to the energy crisis in various industrial and technology sectors. An integrated survey of energy storage technology development, its classification, performance, and safe management is made to resolve these challenges. The development of energy storage technology has been classified into electromechanical, mechanical, electromagnetic, thermodynamics, chemical, and hybrid methods. The current study identifies potential technologies, operational framework, comparison analysis, and practical characteristics. This proposed study also provides useful and practical information to readers, engineers, and practitioners on the global economic effects, global environmental effects, organization resilience, key challenges, and projections of energy storage technologies. An optimal scheduling model is also proposed. Policies for sustainable adaptation are then described. An extensive list of publications to date in the open literature is canvassed to portray various developments in this area.
