Abstract
Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) have the potential to provide coverage extension and capacity improvement in many scenarios, particularly at millimeter wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) frequencies, by making the wireless channels controllable to mitigate blockages in propagation environments. In this paper, we present key propagation-related characteristics and optimal phase shift solutions of IRSs for different incident and reflection angles. Raytracing-based simulations of IRSs were performed at 28 GHz in both indoor and outdoor scenarios, and the results show that IRS can greatly extend coverage and improve capacity at low cost.
