Corpus linguistics and discourse analysis

Chapter 11 provides a brief overview of some of the corpus linguistic approaches and tools that can be usefully applied to Discourse Analysis. The chapter explains what a corpus is and then introduces the standard ‘tools’ typically available with corpus software. The chapter shows how ready-made, online corpora can be used to look at, for example, language change over time before going on to demonstrate how ‘homemade’ corpora can be analysed. The tool used to generate the results discussed in this chapter is AntConc ( Anthony 2022 ), a free-to-download suite of corpus analytical tools, but other tools have similar functionality.
