Abstract
In this paper the use and the potential of the virtual reality technology (VR) in the industrial environment will be discussed. Based on use cases and feasibility studies carried out and evaluated within different research and cooperation projects with the industry the current state of the VR technology and its application in the industrial and manufacturing engineering will be outlined. Especially the use of the VR technology to enable cognitive Design-Review and FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) and criticality analysis (CA) during the design of new customer specific products will be presented. In order to evaluate the practical use of the VR technology in the industrial field two VR applications were implemented within the cooperation projects. The main functions of these applications and its evaluation will be presented and discussed in this paper.
